| Endoscopy
Endoscopy involves the use of a flexible fibre-optic tube attached to a light source and camera which is then used to examine the relevant part of the body - the lungs, stomach, bladder, womb, bowels or joints. The procedure is often performed with sedation in the outpatients department or as a day case in theatre. The endoscope is an invaluable device for diagnosing disorders and for performing biopsies - the removal of a small piece of tissue for analysis in the laboratory.
Endoscopy at The Gulu Independent Hospital
Typical endoscopic examinations include gastroscopy (stomach), colonoscopy (bowel), cystoscopy (bladder), colposcopy (cervix) and bronchoscopy (lungs). It is now becoming common to use this technique to examine joints by passing the endoscope through a small incision - this technique is called arthroscopy. The images are projected onto a TV monitor and a permanent recording can be made on videotape or recorded as a Polaroid picture, so that the results can be discussed with the patient. Depending on the type of procedure it may be conducted in the outpatients department, a specialist endoscopy unit or the operating theatre. The procedures are usually performed under light sedation or local anaesthetic and will require only a few hours stay in the hospital.
